Dieffenbachia is part of the Araceae family and its native range is Mexico to Tropical America.

'Tropic Marianne' has yellow-green oblong leaves with green leaf margins, and a dense upright branched habit. This cultivar is a product of a planned breeding program carried out by the inventor Edwin J. Frazer in Brisbane, Australia. The parentage is an unnamed hybrid of Dieffenbachia 'Marianne'×Dieffenbachia hoffmanii

Dieffenbachia is New Latin and was named after German horticulturalist, Ernst Dieffenbach.

Light: Dieffenbachia 'Tropic Marianne' thrives in bright, indirect light. Strong, direct sunlight can harm its leaves, potentially causing burning or fading of the colours. Insufficient light may result in slower growth and less vibrant variegation, with leaves becoming predominantly green. A position near a window with filtered light in a typical UK home is ideal.

Water: The potting mix should be kept consistently moist but not saturated. Allow the upper inch or two of the soil to dry between waterings. Ensure the pot drains exceptionally well to prevent root problems, which can be an issue, especially in the UK's climate. Reduce watering in autumn and winter when the plant's growth naturally slows.

Soil: A well-draining potting mix is essential. A standard houseplant potting mix, amended with perlite or coarse sand to improve aeration, is often recommended.

Fertilising: Use a diluted liquid fertiliser every two to four weeks during the active growing period in spring and summer. Reduce or stop fertilising during the autumn and winter months.

Temperature: This plant prefers warm temperatures, ideally between 18°C and 29°C (65°F and 85°F). It should be shielded from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes, which can occur indoors, particularly during colder UK months. Temperatures below 15°C (59°F) should be avoided as they can cause leaf yellowing and damage.

Humidity: Dieffenbachia 'Tropic Marianne' appreciates moderate to higher humidity levels. Consider using a humidifier or placing the plant on a pebble tray with water to maintain optimal conditions, especially during drier indoor periods in the UK.

Growth Habit: This Dieffenbachia typically grows as an upright, bushy plant with a central stem, forming a lush clump of foliage. It can attain a significant size indoors, becoming a prominent feature.

Toxicity: Like all Dieffenbachia species, this plant is highly toxic if consumed by humans or pets.
