Pilea hitchcockii is part of the Urticaceae family and its native range is Colombia to Ecuador where it grows primarily in the wet tropical biome.

Pilea hitchcockii has dark foliage with a unique metallic sheen; the long oval-shaped leaves that are typically a very deep green or bronze, sometimes appearing almost black, with prominent reddish undersides and veining that gives them an iridescent quality.

Genus name comes from the Latin ‘Pileus’ meaning cap. The specific epithet honours Albert Spear Hitchcock, an American botanist.

Light: Pilea hitchcockii thrives in bright, indirect light. Strong, direct sunlight can harm its leaves, potentially causing scorching or a loss of the unique sheen. Insufficient light may result in stretched growth and less vibrant colouration. A position near a window with filtered light in a typical UK home is ideal.

Water: The potting mix should be kept consistently damp but not saturated. Allow the upper inch or two of the soil to dry between waterings. Ensure the pot drains exceptionally well to prevent root problems, which can be an issue, especially in the UK’s climate. Reduce watering in autumn and winter when the plant’s growth naturally slows.

Soil: An airy potting mix that drains well is essential. A standard houseplant compost, possibly mixed with perlite or fine orchid bark to improve air circulation and drainage, is often recommended.

Fertilising: Use a diluted liquid fertiliser every two to four weeks during the active growing period in spring and summer. Reduce or stop fertilising during the autumn and winter months.

Temperature: This plant prefers warm temperatures, ideally between 18°C and 27°C. It should be shielded from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes, which can occur indoors, particularly during colder UK months. Temperatures below 15°C should be avoided.

Humidity: Higher humidity levels are beneficial for Pilea hitchcockii. Consider using a humidifier or placing the plant on a pebble tray with water to maintain optimal conditions, especially during drier indoor periods in the UK. This can also help enhance the leaf's iridescence.

Growth Habit: It typically grows as a compact, bushy perennial, forming a dense clump of foliage. It tends to stay relatively small, making it suitable for tabletops or terrariums.

Toxicity: Pilea hitchcockii is generally considered non-toxic to humans and pets. However, it is always a good practice to prevent ingestion by curious children and animals.
