Cyperus alternifolius 'Zumula', often sold as 'Zumula' dwarf umbrella plant or as a type of pet grass, is a charming and compact perennial valued for its grassy, arching foliage. This Cyperus cultivar features numerous slender, bright green stems topped with a circular whorl of narrow, linear leaves, creating a graceful, fountain-like appearance. Its manageable size and appealing form make it a popular choice for tabletops, terrariums, and as an indoor plant in the UK. It is a member of the Cyperaceae family.

The genus name Cyperus comes from the Greek word cyperos, referring to sedges. Alternifolius means "alternate-leaved," describing the arrangement of the leaf-like bracts at the top of the stems. 'Zumula' is a cultivar name.

Light: Cyperus alternifolius 'Zumula' thrives in bright, indirect light to full sun. It can tolerate some lower light conditions, but a position near a window that receives ample, filtered light will promote the best growth.

Water: This plant requires consistently moist to wet conditions. Its pot should be placed in a saucer of water, allowing it to absorb moisture from the bottom. The soil should never be allowed to dry out completely. Using soft water, such as rainwater, is beneficial.

Soil: A rich, loamy potting mix is suitable. The soil should be kept consistently moist. A standard multi-purpose compost works well.

Fertilising: Use a diluted liquid fertiliser every two to four weeks during the active growing period in spring and summer. Reduce or stop fertilising during the autumn and winter months.

Temperature: This plant prefers moderate temperatures, ideally between 15°C and 25°C (59°F and 77°F). It is not tolerant of frost and should be protected from cold draughts, which can occur indoors, particularly during colder UK months.

Humidity: Cyperus alternifolius 'Zumula' thrives in high humidity. Placing the pot in a saucer of water naturally increases the local humidity.

Growth Habit: It has a clumping, upright growth habit, forming a fountain-like display of stems and foliage. Its compact size makes it well-suited for smaller indoor spaces.

Toxicity: Cyperus alternifolius 'Zumula' is generally considered non-toxic to humans and pets, and is often sold specifically as a safe "pet grass" for cats and dogs to chew.
