Plant Bio

Monstera adansonii 'Aurea Variegated' is an exquisite and highly sought-after climbing aroid, celebrated for its iconic "swiss cheese" leaves splashed with vivid yellow tones. This cultivar features the classic oval leaves with natural holes (fenestrations) typical of the species, but with the added beauty of stable, golden-yellow variegation. The patterns can appear as marbled patches, large blocks of colour, or delicate speckles. Because the yellow areas lack chlorophyll, this plant is a slower grower than its fully green relatives, making it a true collector's item. It belongs to the Araceae family.

The genus name Monstera refers to the "monstrous" or unusual nature of the leaves with their natural holes. The name adansonii honours the French botanist Michel Adanson. 'Aurea' is the Latin term for golden, describing the yellow variegation.

Light: This plant requires bright, indirect light to maintain its golden hue. Without enough light, the plant may produce more green to compensate, or the yellow sections may turn brown. However, direct British summer sun can easily scorch the delicate variegated parts of the leaves. A spot near a bright window with a sheer curtain is perfect.

Water: The potting medium should be kept moist but never waterlogged. It is best to wait until the top few centimetres of soil have dried out before watering again. In the UK, be particularly careful during the winter, as the plant will require significantly less water. Overwatering can quickly lead to root rot.

Soil: A very chunky, well-draining aroid mix is essential. A combination of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir or peat-free compost allows the roots to breathe while retaining just enough moisture.

Fertilising: During the spring and summer, use a balanced liquid fertiliser at half-strength every two to four weeks. Avoid feeding the plant during the winter months when growth naturally slows down.

Temperature: It thrives in warm indoor environments, ideally between 18°C and 27°C. It is important to keep this tropical plant away from cold draughts or windows that get very chilly during winter nights, as it is sensitive to sudden drops in temperature.

Humidity: High humidity is a key factor in keeping the foliage looking its best. Aim for levels above 60% to prevent the edges of the leaves from becoming crispy. Using a humidifier or grouping it with other plants can help create a suitable microclimate.

Growth Habit: This is a climbing plant that uses aerial roots to attach itself to surfaces. To see the leaves grow larger and more fenestrated, it is highly recommended to provide a moss pole or a sturdy trellis for support.

Toxicity: Like most members of its family, this Monstera is toxic if eaten by humans or pets.
