Agave potatorum 'Ouhi-Raijin Variegata' is a highly prized dwarf succulent, admired for its incredibly compact and symmetrical rosette of variegated leaves. This Agave cultivar displays thick, spoon-shaped foliage in shades of blue-green or olive, intricately patterned with a bold cream or pale yellow stripe down the centre. The leaf edges are often lined with delicate, small spines. It is a member of the Asparagaceae family.

The genus name Agave comes from a Greek word meaning "noble" or "illustrious," referring to the stately appearance of many species. Potatorum means "of the drinkers," as some agave species are used to make alcoholic beverages. 'Ouhi-Raijin' is a Japanese cultivar name, roughly translating to "Royal Thunder God," a nod to its bold appearance, and 'Variegata' describes its multi-coloured foliage.

Light: Agave potatorum 'Ouhi-Raijin Variegata' thrives in bright light, including several hours of direct sunlight. Optimal light exposure encourages the most vibrant variegation and compact growth. Indoors in the UK, a south-facing windowsill or a very bright conservatory is ideal. Too little light can cause it to lose its distinct patterns and become stretched.

Water: Water sparingly. This succulent stores significant moisture in its thick leaves, so allowing the potting mix to dry out completely between waterings is crucial. During the active growing season (spring and summer), water thoroughly, ensuring all excess drains away. Significantly reduce watering in autumn and winter when the plant is largely dormant; it may only need water once a month or even less if kept very cool. Overwatering is the most common cause of rot.

Soil: A potting mix that drains exceptionally well and is gritty is essential. A specialized cactus or succulent mix, often composed of high percentages of pumice, perlite, or grit, is ideal. This type of mix will prevent any water accumulation around the roots, which is vital for the plant's health, particularly in the UK's often damp climate.

Fertilising: This plant does not require heavy feeding. During the growing season (spring and summer), a very diluted liquid fertiliser formulated for cacti and succulents can be applied monthly. Reduce or stop fertilising during the dormant period.

Temperature: Agave potatorum 'Ouhi-Raijin Variegata' prefers warm temperatures, ideally between 18°C and 28°C (64°F and 82°F). It can tolerate brief drops in temperature, potentially down to -3°C (27°F) if kept completely dry. However, it is generally not reliably frost-hardy in the UK and must be protected from freezing temperatures. If grown outdoors in summer, bring it indoors before any risk of frost.

Humidity: Average household humidity levels are perfectly sufficient. This plant prefers dry air and does not require high humidity.

Growth Habit: It forms a compact, slow-growing rosette, rarely exceeding 12-15 cm in diameter. Mature plants will often produce offsets around the base, gradually forming a small clump over time. This plant flowers once (after many years) and then dies, but the offsets will continue the lineage.

Toxicity: Like other Agaves, the sap of Agave potatorum 'Ouhi-Raijin Variegata' can be mildly irritating to the skin upon contact. The leaves also have sharp marginal spines and a sharp tip. It is considered toxic if ingested by humans or pets, potentially causing gastrointestinal upset.
