Alocasia lauterbachiana 'Variegata' is a highly distinctive and eye-catching aroid, prized for its elongated, sword-shaped leaves with unique patterns of lighter colours. This Alocasia cultivar features deep green foliage with wavy edges, contrasted by splashes and streaks of white, cream, or pale green variegation, and often a purplish underside. Its tall, upright stance and striking appearance make it a dramatic focal point in any indoor plant collection in the UK. It is a member of the Araceae family.

The genus name Alocasia comes from Greek words, indicating a distinction from the taro plant. Lauterbachiana honours the German botanist Karl Lauterbach. 'Variegata' describes the presence of differently coloured zones in the foliage.

Light: Alocasia lauterbachiana 'Variegata' thrives in bright, indirect light. Strong, direct sunlight can harm its leaves, potentially causing burning, especially on the lighter variegated sections. Insufficient light may result in slower growth and less vibrant variegation. A position near a window with filtered light in a typical UK home is ideal.

Water: The potting mix should be kept consistently moist but not saturated. Allow the upper inch or two of the soil to dry between waterings. Ensure the pot has excellent drainage to prevent root issues, which can be a common problem, especially in the UK's climate. Reduce watering in autumn and winter when the plant's growth naturally slows or it enters dormancy.

Soil: An airy and well-draining potting mix is essential. A mix specifically formulated for aroids, incorporating materials such as coco coir, perlite, and orchid bark, is often recommended to provide the necessary aeration and drainage.

Fertilising: Use a diluted liquid fertiliser every two to three weeks during the active growing period in spring and summer. Reduce or stop fertilising during the autumn and winter months.

Temperature: This plant prefers warm temperatures, ideally between 20°C and 28°C (68°F and 82°F). It should be shielded from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes, which can occur indoors, particularly during colder UK months. Temperatures below 16°C (60°F) may trigger dormancy.

Humidity: Higher humidity levels are highly beneficial for Alocasia lauterbachiana 'Variegata', ideally above 60%. Consider using a humidifier or placing the plant on a pebble tray with water to maintain optimal conditions, particularly during drier indoor periods in the UK.

Growth Habit: This Alocasia has an upright, rhizomatous growth habit, with new leaves emerging from underground stems. It can grow quite tall, reaching up to 1-1.5 metres (3-5 feet) indoors under optimal conditions, creating a strong vertical accent.

Toxicity: Like all Alocasias, this plant is toxic if ingested by humans or pets
