Ananas comosus 'Corona', also known as the Pineapple 'Corona', is a fascinating and attractive cultivar of pineapple grown primarily for its ornamental appeal. This variety is admired for its compact size, spiky foliage, and the vibrant red or pink coloration of its developing fruit. Unlike traditional pineapples grown for consumption, 'Corona' produces a small, inedible fruit that serves as a decorative feature. It belongs to the Bromeliaceae family.

Origin: Pineapples are native to South America and were introduced to Europe by Christopher Columbus in the late 15th century. 'Corona' is a cultivated variety developed for its ornamental qualities.

Light: Ananas comosus 'Corona' thrives in bright, direct sunlight. It prefers at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. A south-facing window or a sunny spot outdoors is ideal.

Water: Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Water thoroughly when you do water, ensuring any excess drains away. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while underwatering can cause the leaves to brown and dry.

Potting mix: A well-draining potting mix is essential. A standard potting mix amended with perlite or coarse sand to improve drainage is a good choice.

Fertilising: Feed your Ananas comosus 'Corona' with a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce or stop fertilising during the autumn and winter months.

Temperature: Ananas comosus 'Corona' prefers warm temperatures. It is not frost-tolerant and should be protected from cold temperatures.

Humidity: While it can tolerate average household humidity, it appreciates slightly higher levels. Placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water can be beneficial, especially in drier environments.

Fruiting: The main attraction of 'Corona' is its colorful, inedible fruit. The fruit develops from the center of the plant and gradually changes color from green to red or pink.

Growth Habit: Ananas comosus 'Corona' is a relatively slow-growing plant that remains compact in size, making it suitable for growing in pots or containers.

Toxicity: Ananas comosus 'Corona' is not toxic to humans or pets.
