Anthurium queremalense is part of the Araceae family and its native to Colombia. It is a captivating and relatively rare aroid, admired for its unique, velvety leaves and striking colour. It was discovered by botanist Dr. Tom Croat in 1986 in the cloud forests of Queremal, Colombia where it grows as an epiphyte.

The genus Anthurium is derived from the Greek ‘anthos’ for flower and ‘oura’ meaning tail; 'flower-tail', which probably refers to the tail-like spadix. The specific epithet refers to the region where it was first discovered, likely Queremal, Colombia.

Light: Anthurium queremalense thrives in bright, indirect light; meaning the plant sees the sun for 0-4 hours per day - this could be through trees or a translucent curtain, it’s important for the plant to see the sky in order to thrive.

Water: Anthurium queremalense prefers consistently moist, but not soggy, soil. Allow the top inch or two of soil to dry out slightly between waterings, but avoid letting the soil dry out completely. Water thoroughly when you do water, ensuring any excess water drains away. Overwatering can quickly lead to root rot, a common problem with this species.

Potting mix: A well-draining potting mix is absolutely vital. A blend of potting soil, perlite, orchid bark, and sphagnum moss is a good choice. Avoid mixes that retain too much moisture. A chunky mix, similar to what you might use for orchids or other epiphytic plants, is highly recommended.

Fertilising: Feed your Anthurium queremalense with a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce or stop fertilising during the autumn and winter months.

Temperature: Anthurium queremalense prefers warm temperatures, ideally between 21-27°C. Avoid placing it near draughts or heating/cooling vents.

Humidity: This Anthurium is a high-humidity lover. Using a humidifier, or placing the plant in a terrarium or greenhouse/cabinet environment would be beneficial.

Support: As an epiphyte, Anthurium queremalense benefits from having a support to climb on, such as a moss pole or plank. This will mimic its natural growing conditions and encourage healthier growth.  It can also be grown in a hanging basket.

Toxicity: Anthuriums are toxic if ingested, so keep it away from pets and small children. The sap can also be irritating to the skin.
