Anthurium regale is part of the Araceae family and its native range is NE. Peru where it grows as a subshrub primarily in the wet tropical biome.

This species has large, cordate (heart-shaped), velvety leaves and a distinctive inflorescence. Its impressive size and distinctive texture make it a coveted addition to collections. Although not classified as endangered, the ongoing habitat loss in its native region remains a concern for natural populations.

Genus name comes from the Greek words "anthos" (flower) and "oura" (tail), referring to the characteristic spadix (the "tail") and spathe (the modified leaf surrounding it) of the flower. The specific epithet comes from the Latin word regalis, meaning royal or magnificent.

Light: Anthurium regale thrives in bright light that is not direct. Strong, direct sunlight can harm its delicate leaves, while insufficient light can lead to slower growth and less impressive foliage. A spot near a window with filtered light in a typical UK home would be suitable.

Water: The potting mix should be kept consistently moist but not saturated. Allow the upper inch or two of the potting mix to dry slightly between waterings. Ensure good drainage to prevent root issues, which can be a common problem, especially in the UK's climate. It can be sensitive to hard tap water, so using filtered or rainwater can be beneficial.

Soil: A potting mix that drains exceptionally well and is airy is essential. A mix specifically designed for aroids, incorporating materials such as perlite, orchid bark, coco coir, and sphagnum moss, is often recommended to provide the necessary aeration and drainage.

Fertilising: Use a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser every four to six weeks during the active growing period in spring and summer. Reduce or stop fertilising during the autumn and winter months when the plant's growth naturally slows.

Temperature: This plant prefers warm temperatures, ideally between 18°C and 27°C (65°F and 80°F). It should be shielded from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes, which can occur indoors, particularly during colder UK months. Consistent warmth is important for its well-being.

Humidity: High humidity levels are crucial for Anthurium regale, ideally above 70%. Consider using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray with water, or growing it in an enclosed environment like a terrarium or plant cabinet to maintain optimal conditions, especially during drier indoor periods in the UK. Low humidity can lead to crispy leaf edges.

Growth Habit: This Anthurium typically has an upright, somewhat clumping growth habit, with new leaves emerging from a central stem. It can attain a significant size indoors, requiring ample space.

Toxicity: Like all Anthuriums, this plant is toxic if ingested by humans or pets.
