Anthurium vittariifolium is part of the Araceae family and its native range is SE. Colombia to Peru and Brazil (Amazonas) where it grows as an epiphytic subshrub primarily in the wet tropical biome.

This increasingly popular aroid is prized for its unique, elongated, strap-like leaves. This epiphytic or hemiepiphytic Anthurium features long, pendant leaves that can grow quite substantial in length, often resembling ribbons or straps.  They are typically a deep green, sometimes with a slightly velvety texture, and the prominent midrib adds to their distinctive appearance.

The genus Anthurium is derived from the Greek ‘anthos’ for flower and ‘oura’ meaning tail; 'flower-tail', which probably refers to the tail-like spadix. The specific epithet refers to the leaves' resemblance to those of plants in the Vittaria genus (shoe-string ferns), which also have long, strap-like leaves.

Light: Anthurium vittariifolium thrives in bright, indirect light; meaning the plant sees the sun for 0-4 hours per day - this could be through trees or a translucent curtain, it’s important for the plant to see the sky in order to thrive. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, while insufficient light may result in slower growth and less vibrant colouring.

Water: Anthurium vittariifolium prefers consistently moist, but not waterlogged, soil. Allow the top inch or two of soil to dry out slightly between waterings, but avoid letting the soil dry out completely. Water thoroughly when you do water, ensuring any excess water drains away.

Potting mix: A well-draining potting mix is absolutely vital. A blend of potting soil, perlite, orchid bark, and sphagnum moss is a good choice. Avoid mixes that retain too much moisture. A chunky mix, similar to what you might use for orchids or other epiphytic plants, is beneficial.

Fertilising: Feed your Anthurium vittariifolium with a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce or stop fertilising during the autumn and winter months.

Temperature: Anthurium vittariifolium prefers warm temperatures, ideally between 21-27°C. Avoid placing it near draughts or heating/cooling vents.

Humidity: This Anthurium appreciates higher humidity. Using a humidifier or growing in a cabinet or indoor greenhouse would be beneficial.

Support: As an epiphyte or hemiepiphyte, Anthurium vittariifolium often benefits from having a support to climb on, such as a moss pole or plank. This can mimic its natural growing conditions and encourage healthier growth.

Toxicity: Anthuriums are toxic if ingested, so keep it away from pets and small children.
