Aporocactus 'Melanie' is a distinctive epiphytic cactus, valued for its long, slender, trailing stems and vibrant blooms. This Aporocactus cultivar features cylindrical, often ridged stems that cascade elegantly, producing numerous showy flowers, typically in shades of red or pink, along their length. Its unique form and attractive flowering make it a popular choice for hanging baskets and elevated displays, bringing a touch of exotic flair to indoor spaces in the UK. It is a member of the Cactaceae family.

The genus name Aporocactus comes from Greek words meaning "limbless cactus," referring to its long, narrow stems. 'Melanie' is a cultivar name.

Light: Aporocactus 'Melanie' thrives in bright, indirect light. Strong, direct midday sunlight can scorch its stems. Insufficient light may result in slower growth and reduced flowering. A position near a bright window with filtered light in a typical UK home is ideal.

Water: Water moderately during the active growing season (spring and summer), allowing the potting mix to dry out somewhat between waterings. Ensure good drainage to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to rot. Reduce watering significantly in autumn and winter when the plant is less active. Despite being a cactus, as an epiphyte, it appreciates more regular watering than desert cacti.

Soil: A well-draining, airy potting mix is essential. A specialist orchid or epiphytic cactus mix, or a blend of general potting compost with ample perlite and orchid bark, is ideal to mimic its natural growing conditions and ensure proper aeration.

Fertilising: Use a diluted liquid fertiliser every three to four weeks during the active growing season (spring and summer). A fertiliser formulated for cacti or orchids is suitable. Reduce or stop fertilising during the cooler, dormant months.

Temperature: This cactus prefers warm temperatures during the growing season, ideally between 18°C and 29°C. It is not frost-tolerant and must be protected from temperatures below 10°C, which can occur in UK homes during winter. A cooler period in autumn/early winter can encourage blooming.

Humidity: Aporocactus 'Melanie' appreciates moderate to higher humidity levels, characteristic of its native rainforest habitat. While it can adapt to average indoor humidity in the UK, occasional misting or placing the plant on a pebble tray with water can be beneficial, especially during drier indoor environments with central heating.

Growth Habit: It has a pendulous or trailing growth habit, with long, slender stems that can cascade beautifully from containers. As an epiphytic cactus, it naturally grows on other plants or structures for support in its environment.

Flowering: Given appropriate care and a cool, dry rest period in late autumn/early winter, Aporocactus 'Melanie' can produce numerous attractive flowers along its stems, typically in spring.

Toxicity: Aporocactus 'Melanie' is generally considered non-toxic to humans and pets. However, like many cacti, its small spines or hairs may cause mild irritation upon contact.
