Asparagus falcatus is part of the Asparagaceae and its native range is SW. Ethiopia to S. Africa, Arabian Peninsula, India, Sri Lank where it grows as a climbing perennial or shrub primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome. The roots of this plant form swollen tubers that resemble potatoes and as the plant matures you will notice the small thorns along the stems - these act as protection and as a method of helping the plant climb a host plant to reach the light.

Genus name comes from the Greek asparagos and the specific epithet is Latin meaning sickle-shaped and alludes to the shape of the leaves.

Light: Bright indirect light, meaning the plant sees the sun for 0-4 hours per day - this could be through trees or a translucent curtain, it’s important for the plant to see the sky in order to thrive.

Water: Allow the potting mix to dry out halfway in between watering. If you are top-watering, pour water slowly over the top of the potting mix and allow the water to pass through the drainage holes.

Potting mix: A rich, well draining mix composed of coco coir, perlite, pine bark and worm castings.

Fertilising: Feed your plant each to every other watering during the growing season or when you observe active growth. You can dilute fertiliser to half the recommended amount but never add more.

Temperature: 21°C is ideal but Asparagus falcatus tolerates cooler temperatures if the potting mix is dry.

Humidity: This plant would prefer higher humidity but adapts well to home conditions. You can increase humidity by placing the plant on a watered pebble tray or using a humidifier.

Asparagus falcatus are toxic, keep out of reach of pets and children.
