Begonia rex 'Red Kiss' is a striking rhizomatous Begonia cultivar, valued for its dramatic, spiraled leaves and vibrant colouration. This Begonia variety features large, textured leaves with an intense red centre, which fades to a deeper, almost black-purple towards the leaf margins.

The genus name Begonia honors Michel Bégon, a French patron of botany. The specific epithet rex means "king," referring to the plant's regal appearance. 'Red Kiss' is a cultivar name, aptly describing the vibrant red centre of the leaf that appears to have a dark border.

Light: Begonia rex 'Red Kiss' thrives in bright light that is not direct. Strong, direct sunlight can harm its leaves, potentially causing scorching or a fading of the intense colours. Insufficient light may result in slower growth and less vibrant colouration. A position near a window with filtered light in a typical UK home is ideal.

Water: The potting mix should be kept consistently damp but not saturated. Allow the upper inch or two of the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Ensure the pot drains exceptionally well to prevent root problems, which can be an issue, especially in the UK's climate. Reduce watering in autumn and winter when the plant's growth naturally slows.

Soil: An airy potting mix that drains well is essential. A mix designed for Begonias or a standard houseplant compost amended with perlite is often suitable.

Fertilising: Use a diluted liquid fertiliser every two to four weeks during the active growing period in spring and summer. Reduce or stop fertilising during the autumn and winter months.

Temperature: This plant prefers warm temperatures, ideally between 18°C and 27°C. It is not tolerant of frost and should be shielded from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes, which can occur indoors, particularly during colder UK months.

Humidity: Higher humidity levels are highly beneficial for Begonia rex 'Red Kiss', ideally above 60%. Consider using a humidifier or placing the plant on a pebble tray with water to maintain optimal conditions, especially during drier indoor periods in the UK.

Growth Habit: It has a rhizomatous growth habit, with leaves emerging from a central stem. It typically remains a manageable size, suitable for display on shelves or tabletops.

Toxicity: Begonias, including 'Red Kiss', are toxic if consumed by humans or pets.
