Calathea have been reclassified to the genus Goeppertia, you will see this plant labelled as Calathea ‘Mieli’ - its true name is Goeppertia ‘Mieli’.

Goeppertia is part of the Marantaceae family and the native range of this species is Mexico to Tropical America.

This cultivar displays ornate foliage with a deep green or purplish base, intricately marked with fine, white or pale pink pinstripes across the leaf surface. Like other Goeppertia, it exhibits daily leaf movement, with leaves rising at night and lowering during the day, a characteristic known as nyctinasty.

The genus name Calathea comes from the Greek word kalathos, meaning "basket," referring to the shape of the flower bracts or leaves used for weaving. 'Mieli' is a cultivar name.

Light: Calathea 'Mieli' thrives in bright light that is not direct. Strong, direct sunlight can harm its delicate leaves, causing scorching or fading of its vibrant patterns. Insufficient light may result in duller colours. A position near a window with filtered light in a typical UK home is ideal.

Water: The potting mix should be kept consistently damp but not saturated. Allow the upper inch of the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Ensure the pot drains exceptionally well to prevent root problems, which can be an issue, especially in the UK's climate. This plant can be sensitive to chemicals in tap water, so using filtered water or rainwater is often beneficial to prevent leaf tip browning. It also prefers room temperature water.

Soil: An airy potting mix that drains well is essential. A blend often recommended for Calatheas includes components like peat moss, perlite, and orchid bark, which provide good aeration and moisture retention without becoming waterlogged.

Fertilising: Use a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser every two to four weeks during the active growing period in spring and summer. Reduce or stop fertilising during the autumn and winter months when the plant's growth naturally slows.

Temperature: This plant prefers warm temperatures, ideally between 18°C and 27°C. It should be shielded from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes, which can occur indoors, particularly during colder UK months. Temperatures below 15°C should be avoided.

Humidity: High humidity levels are highly beneficial for Calathea 'Mieli', ideally above 60%. Consider using a humidifier or placing the plant on a pebble tray with water to maintain optimal conditions, especially during drier indoor periods in the UK. Low humidity can cause leaf edges to turn brown and crisp.

Growth Habit: It typically forms a compact, bushy, and clumping plant. New leaves emerge from the base, gradually unfurling as they mature.

Toxicity: Calathea 'Mieli' is generally considered non-toxic to humans and pets.
