Codiaeum variegatum var. variegatum is part of the Euphorbiaceae family and the native range of this variety is E. Jawa to Fiji. ‘Excellent’ is a cultivar with lobed, coriaceous leaves which are brightly coloured. Best colour is thought to develop in bright light under cooler temperatures.
Genus name comes from the Greek word kodeia or kodia meaning ‘head, head of plants’ which may be in reference to the fruit or leaves being used for wreaths. The genus name could also be from the Malayan vanacular 'kodiho’. The specific epithet means variegated, referring to its variously variegated leaves.
Light: Bright indirect light, meaning the plant sees the sun for 0-4 hours per day - this could be through trees or a translucent curtain, it’s important for the plant to see the sky in order to thrive. Codiaeum enjoy a few hours of direct light.
Water: Keep substrate evenly moist to prevent wilting.
Potting mix: A well draining mix composed of coco coir, perlite, orchid bark and worm castings. If your Codiaeum is going to be receiving direct light, your substrate can be a little less free-draining.
Fertilising: Feed every couple of waterings during the growing season.
Temperature: 18- 32°C, keep this plant away from draughts and cold spots.
Humidity: Codiaeum prefer moderate to high humidity, this can be achieved by grouping plants together, misting, using a humidifier and placing your plant on a tray of watered pebbles.
Codiaeum variegatum is toxic, keep out of reach of pets and children.
