Dracaena fragrans 'Lemon Lime', often called the Lemon Lime Dracaena or Corn Plant, is a popular and easy-care houseplant prized for its vibrant, variegated foliage. This cultivar of Dracaena fragrans features long, strap-like leaves with stripes of bright green, lime green, and often a creamy yellow, creating a cheerful and refreshing display. It belongs to the Asparagaceae family.
The genus name Dracaena comes from the Greek word drakaina, meaning "female dragon," referring to the reddish resin produced by some species, which was thought to resemble dragon's blood. Fragrans means "fragrant," although the flowers of this species are not particularly noticeable when grown indoors. 'Lemon Lime' refers to the citrusy colours of the variegation.
Light: Dracaena fragrans 'Lemon Lime' thrives in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, while insufficient light may result in less vibrant variegation and slower growth. A spot near a window with filtered light, or a room with ample ambient light, is ideal.
Water: Allow the top inch or two of soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Water thoroughly when you do water, ensuring any excess drains away. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while allowing the plant to dry out too much can cause the leaf tips to brown.
Potting mix: A well-draining potting mix is essential. A standard houseplant potting mix, amended with perlite or orchid bark to improve drainage, is a good choice.
Fertilising: Feed your Dracaena fragrans 'Lemon Lime' with a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce or stop fertilising during the autumn and winter months.
Temperature: Dracaena fragrans 'Lemon Lime' prefers typical room temperatures, roughly between 18-24°C (65-75°F). It is not frost-tolerant and should be protected from cold temperatures. Avoid placing it near draughts or heating/cooling vents.
Humidity: While Dracaena fragrans 'Lemon Lime' can tolerate average household humidity, it appreciates slightly higher levels. Using a humidifier or placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water can be beneficial, especially in drier environments.
Growth Habit: Dracaena fragrans 'Lemon Lime' is a slow-growing plant that can eventually reach a considerable size, although it remains relatively compact for many years when grown indoors.
Toxicity: Dracaena fragrans is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested.
