Ficus benjamina is part of the Moraceae family and its native range is is Tropical & Subtropical Asia and N. Australia. It is commonly known as the Weeping Fig or Benjamin Fig, is a popular and elegant houseplant prized for its graceful, drooping branches and lush, glossy green foliage. This Ficus species features slender, arching branches adorned with small, oval-shaped leaves. It can grow into a substantial tree indoors, making a striking focal point in homes and offices.
The genus name Ficus is the Latin word for fig. Benjamina is thought to refer to the plant's resemblance to the weeping willow tree, which is sometimes called the Benjamin tree.
Light: Ficus benjamina thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct morning sun, but intense afternoon sun can scorch the leaves. A spot near a sunny window, but not directly in the path of harsh sunlight, is ideal.
Water: Allow the top inch or two of soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Water thoroughly when you do water, ensuring any excess drains away. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while allowing the plant to dry out too much can cause leaf drop.
Potting mix: A well-draining potting mix is essential. A standard houseplant potting mix amended with perlite or orchid bark to improve drainage is a good choice.
Fertilising: Feed your Ficus benjamina with a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce or stop fertilising during the autumn and winter months.
Temperature: Ficus benjamina prefers typical room temperatures. It should be protected from cold temperatures and draughts.
Humidity: While it can tolerate average household humidity, it appreciates slightly higher levels. Using a humidifier or grouping plants together can be beneficial.
Pruning: Regular pruning can help maintain the desired shape and size. This Ficus can be pruned to encourage bushier growth or to maintain a more tree-like form.
Toxicity: The sap of Ficus benjamina can be irritating to the skin and eyes. It's best to keep it away from pets and small children.
