Ficus aspera is part of the Moraceae family and its native range is Vanuatu where it grows as a tree primarily in the wet tropical biome.
'Snowstorm' is a cultivar of Ficus aspera, valued for its striking, highly variegated foliage. This Ficus variety typically features oval-shaped, glossy leaves that are a mosaic of dark green, lighter green, and abundant creamy white or very pale green patterns. It has intricate variegation and an often bushy, upright growth habit.
The genus name Ficus is the Latin word for fig. 'Snowstorm' is a cultivar name, clearly describing the profusion of white variegation across the leaves.
Light: Ficus 'Snowstorm' thrives in bright, indirect light. Strong, direct sunlight can damage its leaves and diminish the variegation, while insufficient light may result in slower growth and less pronounced, duller patterns. A position near a window that receives filtered light in a typical UK home is ideal. Variegated Ficus varieties generally need brighter conditions than their all-green counterparts to maintain their coloration.
Water: The potting mix should be allowed to dry out somewhat between waterings. Water thoroughly when the top two to three centimetres of soil feel dry to the touch, ensuring any excess moisture drains away completely. Overwatering can lead to leaf drop and root issues, which can be a common problem, especially in the UK's climate.
Soil: A well-draining potting mix is essential. A general-purpose houseplant potting mix, possibly amended with perlite or orchid bark to improve aeration, is often recommended.
Fertilising: Use a diluted liquid fertiliser approximately once a month during the active growing season in spring and summer. Reduce or stop fertilising during the autumn and winter months when the plant's growth naturally slows.
Temperature: This plant prefers stable, warm temperatures, ideally between 18°C and 24°C. It should be shielded from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes, which can occur indoors, particularly during colder UK months, as these can cause leaf drop.
Humidity: Ficus 'Snowstorm' appreciates moderate to high humidity levels. While it can adapt to average indoor humidity in the UK, using a humidifier or placing the plant on a pebble tray with water can be beneficial, especially during drier indoor periods with central heating.
Growth Habit: It has a bushy and often upright growth habit, forming a dense plant. With appropriate pruning, it can be shaped into a small tree form indoors.
Toxicity: Like other Ficus species, this plant produces a milky sap (latex) that can cause skin irritation upon contact. If ingested by humans or pets, it is considered toxic and can lead to gastrointestinal upset. Keep it out of reach of children and animals, and wear gloves when handling or pruning if you have sensitive skin.
