Hypoestes phyllostachya, commonly called polka dot plant or flamingo plant, is a charming foliage plant, valued for its striking, speckled leaves. This species features green leaves with prominent spots of various colours, most commonly pink, red, or white, creating a vibrant and colourful appearance. It is frequently grown as a houseplant in the UK and can also be used as a summer bedding plant. It is a member of the Acanthaceae family.

The genus name Hypoestes comes from Greek words, possibly referring to the way the flower is enclosed. Phyllostachya describes the arrangement of the flowers in a leaf-like spike.

Light: Hypoestes phyllostachya grows best in bright conditions where the light is not direct. Strong sunlight can damage the leaves, and insufficient light can lead to less intense coloration. A bright spot near a window but shielded from harsh sun is ideal in a UK home.

Water: The soil should be kept consistently moist but not overly wet. Allow the upper portion of the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Too much water can lead to weak, leggy growth and root problems, especially in the UK's climate.

Soil: A potting mix that drains well is essential for this plant. A general-purpose houseplant compost is usually suitable.

Fertilising: Regular feeding with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer is recommended during the active growing period in spring and summer. Reduce or stop feeding during the autumn and winter months.

Temperature: This plant prefers warm temperatures and should be protected from cold air and temperatures below 15°C (59°F). Typical indoor temperatures in the UK are usually suitable.

Humidity: Hypoestes phyllostachya benefits from higher humidity levels. If the air is dry, particularly during winter with central heating, consider using a humidifier or placing the plant on a tray of pebbles with water.

Growth Habit: It exhibits a bushy and upright growth pattern, typically reaching a height and spread of around 30-60cm indoors. It may become more stretched if grown in low light.

Toxicity: Hypoestes phyllostachya is generally considered safe for people and animals. However, it's always a good practice to keep plants out of reach of pets and young children.
