Kalanchoe thyrsiflora is part of the Crassulaceae family and its native range is S. Africa where it grows as a succulent biennial or subshrub primarily in the desert or dry shrubland biome.

It is commonly called the paddle plant due to its paddle shaped leaves. This Kalanchoe species displays large, thick, rounded foliage arranged in a compact rosette, typically in soft blue-grey or greenish-pink tones, often with vibrant red edges, especially when exposed to ample sunlight.

The genus name Kalanchoe is thought to come from the Chinese words for "that which falls and grows." The specific epithet refers to the flower clusters resembling a thyrsus, a dense, often conical, bloom formation.

Light: Kalanchoe thyrsiflora flourishes in full sunlight. It requires at least six hours of direct sun each day to develop its most vivid red leaf margins and maintain compact growth. Indoors in the UK, a south-facing window with abundant light is ideal. Not enough light will result in greener, less colourful foliage and stretched growth.

Water: Water sparingly. This succulent holds a significant amount of water in its fleshy leaves, so letting the potting mix completely dry out between waterings is crucial. During its active growing period (spring and summer), water thoroughly, ensuring all excess moisture drains away. Significantly reduce watering in autumn and winter when the plant rests. Too much water is a frequent cause of rot, particularly in the often damp UK climate.

Soil: A potting mix that drains exceptionally well is essential. A specialized mix for cacti or succulents is ideal. This type of mix will help prevent water accumulation around the roots, which is vital for the plant's health.

Fertilising: This plant does not require heavy feeding. During the growing season (spring and summer), a diluted liquid fertiliser made for cacti and succulents can be applied monthly. Reduce or stop fertilising during the dormant period.

Temperature: Kalanchoe thyrsiflora prefers warm temperatures, ideally between 18°C and 29°C . It is not tolerant of frost and must be protected from temperatures below 7°C. If grown outdoors in the UK, it must be brought inside before cold weather arrives in autumn.

Humidity: Standard household humidity levels are sufficient. This plant prefers dry air and does not need high humidity.

Growth Habit: It typically grows as a low-lying succulent, forming a rosette of large, paddle-shaped leaves. Over time, it may develop a short stem. It can also produce a tall flower stalk once mature.

Flowering: Mature plants, usually a few years old, may produce a tall, upright flower stalk adorned with yellow, tubular flowers. After flowering, the primary rosette may die, but new plantlets often form at the base to continue the plant's life cycle.

Toxicity: Kalanchoe species are poisonous if consumed by humans or pets.
