Monstera is part of the Araceae family, 'Burle Marx Flame' was discovered in the garden of landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx in Brazil.
Unfortunately it’s origin wasn’t recorded before he passed away so it’s not known for certain whether it is a species, a hybrid or a mutation of Monstera deliciosa.
‘Burle Marx Flame is highly sought-after; it has deeply lobed coriaceous leaves and a climbing growth habit. It is known as a slow grower but I think it’s worth the wait.
Genus name is possibly from the Latin ‘monstrum’, meaning monster or ‘monstrifer’ meaning monster-bearing. 'Burle Marx Flame' is named in honour of the celebrated Brazilian landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, known for his innovative and bold designs.
Light: Monstera 'Burle Marx Flame' thrives in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can damage the leaves, while insufficient light can result in slower growth and less pronounced leaf divisions. A spot near a window with filtered light, or a room with plenty of ambient light, is ideal.
Water: Allow the top portion of the soil to dry out a little between waterings. Water thoroughly when you do water, ensuring any excess drains away. Overwatering can lead to root problems, while allowing the plant to dry out too much can cause the leaves to droop and become brown.
Potting mix: A well-draining potting mix is essential. A standard houseplant potting mix, with added perlite or orchid bark to improve drainage, is a good choice. Avoid mixes that hold onto too much moisture.
Fertilising: Provide your Monstera 'Burle Marx Flame' with a diluted, balanced liquid feed every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce or stop feeding during the autumn and winter months.
Temperature: Monstera 'Burle Marx Flame' prefers typical room temperatures, roughly between 18-24°C. Keep it away from draughts and nearby heating/cooling appliances.
Humidity: While Monstera 'Burle Marx Flame' can handle average household humidity, it benefits from slightly higher levels. Regularly misting the leaves or placing the plant on a pebble tray with water can be helpful, especially in drier homes.
Growth Habit: This Monstera grows best when trained to climb on a support.
Leaf Shape: The distinctive, deeply lobed leaves are the hallmark of this cultivar. The shape can evolve somewhat as the plant matures.
Toxicity: Like other Monsteras, 'Burle Marx Flame' is toxic if eaten, so it's a good idea to keep it out of reach of pets and young children.
