Oxalis triangularis is part of the Oxalidaceae family and its native range is Peru to Brazil and N. Argentina. This plant has purple, trifoliate leaves that have a photonastic response - leaves are open during the day and typically close at night. Oxalis triangularis have a period of dormancy; leaves will turn from purple to brown and start dying back, now is the time to trim the plant then place it in a dark spot and omit watering.

Genus name comes from the Greek ‘oxus’ meaning ‘sour’, this is in reference to the bitter tasting leaves. Specific epithet comes from the Latin ‘triangulus’ meaning ‘with three corners’.

Light: Bright indirect light, meaning the plant sees the sun for 0-4 hours per day - this could be through trees or a translucent curtain, it’s important for the plant to see the sky in order to thrive. Leaves may burn if exposed to too much light.

Water: Allow the first 2-3 inches of mix to dry out, pour water slowly over the top and allow the water to pass through the drainage holes.

Potting mix: A well draining mix composed of coco coir, perlite or vermiculite, orchid bark or grit and worm castings.

Fertilising: Feed your plant every few waterings during the growing season or when you observe active growth. You can dilute fertiliser to half the recommended amount but never add more

Temperature: 15-27˚C.

Humidity: Oxalis triangularis do well to adapt to average home humidity. You can increase humidity by placing the plant on a watered pebble tray or using a humidifier.

Oxalis triangularis are toxic, keep out of reach of pets and children.
