Philodendron bipinnatifidum is part of the Araceae family and the native range of this species is E. Bolivia to SE. & S. Brazil and NE. Argentina where it grows as a scrambling shrub primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome.
There is very little information regarding the origins of this cultivar. Leaf blades are leathery and lobed, foliage emerges in rich bronze and chocolate shades, gradually maturing to a glossy, dark green.
Genus name comes from the Greek ‘philo’ meaning loving and ‘dendro’ meaning tree. Specific epithet comes from the combination of the words ‘bi’, meaning twice, ‘pinnae’ meaning feather-like and ‘findus’ meaning to split; this is in reference to the bilateral symmetric division of the leaves.
Light: Philodendron 'Choco Empress' thrives in bright light that is not direct. Strong, direct sunlight can harm its leaves, particularly younger ones, causing burning. Insufficient light may result in slower growth and less vibrant initial colours. A position near a window with filtered light in a typical UK home is ideal.
Water: The potting mix should be allowed to become mostly dry between waterings. Water thoroughly when the upper two to three centimetres of soil feel dry to the touch, ensuring any excess moisture drains away completely. Overwatering can lead to root problems. Reduce watering in autumn and winter when the plant's growth naturally slows.
Soil: An airy potting mix that drains well is essential. A mix specifically created for aroids, incorporating materials such as coco coir, perlite, and orchid bark, is often recommended to provide the necessary air circulation and drainage. This plant prefers soil that is slightly acidic to neutral.
Fertilising: Use a diluted liquid fertiliser every four to six weeks during the active growing period in spring and summer. Reduce or stop fertilising during the autumn and winter months.
Temperature: This plant prefers warm temperatures, ideally between 18°C and 26°C. It should be shielded from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes, which can occur indoors, particularly during colder UK months. Temperatures below 13°C should be avoided.
Humidity: Philodendron 'Choco Empress' appreciates moderate to high humidity levels. While it can tolerate typical indoor humidity in the UK, using a humidifier or placing the plant on a pebble tray with water can be beneficial, especially during drier indoor periods.
Growth Habit: This Philodendron typically has an upright, self-heading growth pattern, forming a bushy clump. Its leaves develop more pronounced lobes and pointed tips as the plant matures.
Toxicity: Like other Philodendrons, this plant is toxic if consumed by humans or pets.
