Philodendron plowmanii is a striking and highly sought-after aroid, celebrated for its large, uniquely shaped leaves and often vibrant coloration. This Philodendron features heart-shaped or sometimes almost triangular leaves with prominent, often contrasting veins. The leaves can range in colour from deep green to almost burgundy, and the veining can be a lighter green, cream, or even pinkish hue, creating a beautiful and dramatic contrast. It belongs to the Araceae family.

The genus name Philodendron comes from the Greek words philo (love) and dendron (tree), reflecting the plant's natural tendency to grow on or around trees in its native habitat. Plowmanii honours the American botanist Timothy Plowman, known for his work on South American flora.

Light: Philodendron plowmanii thrives in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, while insufficient light may result in less vibrant colouring and slower growth. A spot near a window with filtered light, or a room with ample ambient light, is ideal.

Water: Philodendrons prefer consistently moist, but not waterlogged, soil. Allow the top inch or two of soil to dry out slightly between waterings, but avoid letting the soil dry out completely. Water thoroughly when you do water, ensuring any excess water drains away. Overwatering can quickly lead to root rot, a common problem with this species.

Potting mix: A well-draining potting mix is absolutely vital. A blend of potting soil, perlite, orchid bark, and sphagnum moss is a good choice. Avoid mixes that retain too much moisture. A chunky mix, similar to what you might use for orchids or other epiphytic plants, is beneficial.

Fertilising: Feed your Philodendron plowmanii with a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce or stop fertilising during the autumn and winter months.

Temperature: Philodendron plowmanii prefers warm temperatures, ideally between 21-27°C (70-80°F). It is not frost-tolerant and should be protected from cold conditions. Avoid placing it near draughts or heating/cooling vents.

Humidity: This Philodendron appreciates higher humidity. Using a humidifier, or placing the plant in a terrarium or greenhouse environment can be very beneficial. Low humidity can lead to crispy leaf edges and hinder growth.

Growth Habit: Philodendron plowmanii is typically a climbing or vining plant, although it can also be grown as a terrestrial plant.

Toxicity: Philodendrons are toxic if ingested, so keep it away from pets and small children. The sap can also be irritating to the skin.
