Sansevieria trifasciata 'Metallica', also known as the Metallic Snake Plant or sometimes just 'Metallica', is a striking succulent prized for its upright, almost metallic-looking leaves. This cultivar of the popular Snake Plant is characterised by its silvery-green leaves with subtle darker banding, giving it a unique and modern appearance. It belongs to the Asparagaceae family.
The genus name Sansevieria honours Prince Raimondo di Sangro of San Severo, an Italian nobleman. Trifasciata refers to the three bands or stripes often found on the leaves of the species. 'Metallica' describes the distinctive metallic sheen and coloration of this particular variety.
Light: Sansevieria trifasciata 'Metallica' is remarkably tolerant of a wide range of light conditions, from low light to bright, indirect light. It can even tolerate some direct sun, although it's best to avoid prolonged exposure, especially in hot climates.
Water: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water thoroughly when you do water, and then allow the pot to drain completely. Overwatering is the most common cause of problems for Snake Plants. In the winter, you may only need to water every few weeks or even less frequently.
Potting mix: A well-draining potting mix is essential. A cactus or succulent mix is ideal. Avoid regular potting soil, as it retains too much moisture.
Fertilising: Sansevierias are not heavy feeders. Fertilise sparingly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser. Avoid fertilising during the autumn and winter.
Temperature: Sansevieria trifasciata 'Metallica' prefers typical room temperatures. It is not frost-tolerant.
Humidity: Sansevierias tolerate a wide range of humidity levels. They do not require any special humidity considerations.
Toxicity: Sansevierias are mildly toxic if ingested, potentially causing nausea and vomiting. Keep away from pets and small children.
