Schefflera actinophylla is a synonym for Heptapleurum actinophyllum as the plant was reclassified.
Heptapleurum actinophyllum is part of the Araliaceae family and its native range is S. New Guinea to N. Australia where it grows as a scrambling tree in the wet tropical biome. It uses its roots to clasp itself around the trees, similar to strangler figs. Leaves are compound palmate, with 7-16 stalked leaflets arranged in a whorl.
Genus name comes from the Greek words hepta meaning ‘seven’ and pleuron meaning ‘rib side’; this is in reference to the leaflets. Specific epithet is derived from the Greek word aktis, meaning ‘a ray’ and pullon meaning 'a leaf', referring to the whorled arrangement of the leaves.
