Schefflera arboricola 'Melanie', commonly known as the Dwarf Umbrella Tree or simply Schefflera 'Melanie', is a much-loved houseplant valued for its neat, compact form and glossy, deep green leaves. This variety of Schefflera arboricola is a popular choice due to its relatively easy care requirements and attractive appearance. It's a member of the Araliaceae family.

The genus name Schefflera is a tribute to the German botanist J. C. Scheffler. Arboricola means "tree-dwelling," a nod to the plant's natural growth habit of growing on trees in its native environment. 'Melanie' is a cultivar name, likely chosen to reflect its compact and desirable qualities.

Light: Schefflera 'Melanie' thrives in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can cause damage to the leaves, while too little light can result in less compact growth and paler foliage. A position near a window with filtered light, or a room with ample ambient light, is ideal.

Water: Allow the top portion of the soil to dry out a little between waterings. Water thoroughly when you do water, ensuring any excess water can drain away. Overwatering can lead to problems with the roots, while allowing the plant to dry out excessively can cause the leaves to droop and become brown.

Potting mix: A well-draining potting mix is essential. A standard houseplant potting mix, with added perlite or orchid bark to improve drainage, is a good option. Avoid mixes that retain too much moisture.

Fertilising: Give your Schefflera 'Melanie' a diluted, balanced liquid feed every 4-6 weeks during the spring and summer growing period. Reduce or stop feeding during the autumn and winter months.

Temperature: Schefflera 'Melanie' prefers typical room temperatures, roughly between 18-24°C (65-75°F). It is not tolerant of frost and should be protected from cold conditions. Avoid placing it close to draughts or heating/cooling vents.

Humidity: While Schefflera 'Melanie' can cope with average household humidity, it appreciates slightly higher levels. Regularly misting the leaves or placing the plant on a pebble tray with water can be beneficial, particularly in drier homes.

Pruning: Schefflera 'Melanie' can be pruned to maintain its shape and promote a fuller appearance. It's best to prune during the growing season.

Toxicity: Scheffleras are considered mildly toxic if eaten, so it's a good idea to keep them out of reach of pets and young children.
