Selenicereus wercklei is part of the Cactaceae family and its native range is Costa Rica where it grows in the wet tropical biome. This cactus grows as an epiphyte, lithophyte and terrestrial plant, it is covered in aerial roots to aid its climb. Flowers are up to 6” long with a spreading corolla made up of white petals with red at the base.
Genus name comes from the Greek Σελήνη (Selene), the Moon Goddess, this is reference to the night bloom the plant produces. The specific epithet honours the French-born botanist and horticulturalist Carlos (Karl) Werclé.
Light: Selenicereus wercklei thrives in bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate some morning sun, intense direct sunlight can scorch its delicate stems. A bright spot in an east or north-facing window in a UK home is often suitable.
Water: Water moderately during the active growing season (spring and summer), allowing the potting mix to dry out somewhat between waterings. Ensure proper drainage to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to rot. Reduce watering significantly in autumn and winter when the plant is less active.
Soil: A well-draining, airy potting mix is essential. A specialist orchid or epiphytic cactus mix, or a blend of potting soil with plenty of perlite and orchid bark, is ideal to mimic its natural growing conditions.
Fertilising: Feed with a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser every three to four weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). A fertiliser formulated for cacti or orchids is suitable. Reduce or stop fertilising during the cooler, dormant months.
Temperature: This cactus prefers warm temperatures, ideally between 18-29°C during the growing season. It is not frost-tolerant and must be protected from temperatures below 10°C, which can cause damage. If grown outdoors in the UK, it should be brought indoors before temperatures drop.
Humidity: Selenicereus wercklei appreciates moderate to higher humidity levels, characteristic of its native rainforest habitat. While it can adapt to average indoor humidity in the UK, occasional misting or placing the plant on a pebble tray with water can be beneficial, especially during drier indoor environments.
Growth Habit: It has a vining or trailing growth habit, with long, slender stems that can extend significantly. As an epiphytic cactus, it naturally grows on other plants for support.
Toxicity: Selenicereus wercklei is toxic to humans and pets.
