Curio herreanus 'Purple Flush', commonly known as String of Tears (though sometimes this name is used for other similar plants), is a charming succulent prized for its unique, bead-like leaves and often purplish coloration. This cultivar of Curio herreanus features trailing stems adorned with small, spherical or teardrop-shaped leaves that are typically green with a purplish or reddish tinge, especially when exposed to sufficient sunlight. It belongs to the Asteraceae family.
The genus name Curio comes from the Latin word curiosus, meaning "curious" or "remarkable," referring to the unusual appearance of these succulents. Herreanus honours the German botanist and succulent specialist, Hans Herre. 'Purple Flush' describes the purplish or reddish coloration that often develops on the leaves.
Light: Curio herreanus 'Purple Flush' thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct morning sun, but intense afternoon sun can scorch the leaves. A spot near a sunny window is ideal.
Water: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. String of Tears is a succulent and can store water in its leaves, so overwatering is a common problem and can lead to root rot. Water thoroughly when you do water, ensuring any excess drains away. In the winter, you may need to water even less frequently.
Potting mix: A well-draining potting mix is essential. A cactus or succulent mix is ideal. Avoid regular potting soil, as it retains too much moisture.
Fertilising: String of Tears is not a heavy feeder. Fertilise sparingly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser. Avoid fertilising during the autumn and winter.
Temperature: Curio herreanus 'Purple Flush' prefers typical room temperatures. It is not frost-tolerant.
Humidity: String of Tears tolerates a wide range of humidity levels. It does not require any special humidity considerations.
Growth Habit: As the name suggests, it is a trailing plant, ideal for hanging baskets or for displaying on shelves where the stems can cascade down.
Propagation: String of Tears is easily propagated from stem cuttings.
Toxicity: Curio species can contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which can be toxic if ingested. It's best to keep them away from pets and small children.
