Senecio x peregrinus, commonly known as String of Dolphins, is a charming succulent prized for its unique, dolphin-shaped leaves. This unusual plant features trailing stems adorned with fleshy, curved leaves that resemble tiny dolphins leaping through the air. It's a popular choice for hanging baskets and shelves. It belongs to the Asteraceae family.

The genus name Senecio is derived from the Latin word senex, meaning "old man," possibly referring to the white hairs found on some species. Peregrinus means "wandering" or "foreign," perhaps alluding to the plant's origin or growth habit. The common name "String of Dolphins" perfectly captures the whimsical shape of its leaves.

Light: Senecio x peregrinus thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct morning sun, but intense afternoon sun can scorch the leaves. A spot near a sunny window is ideal.

Water: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. String of Dolphins is a succulent and can store water in its leaves, so overwatering is a common problem and can lead to root rot. Water thoroughly when you do water, ensuring any excess drains away. In the winter, you may need to water even less frequently.

Potting mix: A well-draining potting mix is essential. A cactus or succulent mix is ideal. Avoid regular potting soil, as it retains too much moisture.

Fertilising: String of Dolphins is not a heavy feeder. Fertilise sparingly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser. Avoid fertilising during the autumn and winter.

Temperature: Senecio x peregrinus prefers typical room temperatures. It is not frost-tolerant.

Humidity: String of Dolphins tolerates a wide range of humidity levels. It does not require any special humidity considerations.

Growth Habit: As the name suggests, it is a trailing plant, ideal for hanging baskets or for displaying on shelves where the stems can cascade down.

Propagation: String of Dolphins is easily propagated from stem cuttings.

Toxicity: Senecios can contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which can be toxic if ingested. It's best to keep them away from pets and small children.
