Tillandsia caput-medusae is part of the Bromeliaceae family, its native range is S. Mexico to Central America where it grows as an epiphyte primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome.

This Tillandsia has a swollen base and twisting, silvery-green leaves. When it blooms, a colourful flower spike emerges, frequently displaying shades of pink or red. Its unusual form and ability to grow without soil make it a popular choice for creative displays.

These epiphytic plants are often called ‘Air Plants’ due to their minimal root structure and their ability to take nutrients from the air around them. Tillandsia are covered in trichomes which absorb moisture from the air, in its natural environment, it would live on a host tree, absorbing nutrients from decaying matter and water from axils.

The genus name was given by Carl Linnaeus to honour the Swedish physician and botanist Elias Tillandz (originally Tillander). The specific epithet means ‘head of Medusa.’

Light: Tillandsia caput-medusae thrives in bright light that is not direct. Strong, direct midday sunlight can harm its leaves. Insufficient light may result in slower growth and less vibrant colouration. A spot near a bright window with filtered light in a typical UK home is ideal.

Water: This air plant absorbs moisture and nutrients through its leaves, not its roots. It needs to be hydrated regularly. This can be done by misting it thoroughly several times a week, or by soaking the entire plant in room temperature water for 20-30 minutes once a week. After either method, ensure the plant drains completely and dries fully within a few hours to prevent rot. Good air circulation is crucial for drying.

Soil: Tillandsia caput-medusae does not require soil. It is an epiphyte, meaning it naturally grows on other plants or surfaces for support.

Fertilising: This plant benefits from occasional feeding. Use a very diluted liquid fertiliser formulated for bromeliads or orchids, applying it as a mist or by adding it to the soaking water, approximately once a month during the active growing season (spring and summer).

Temperature: This plant prefers moderate temperatures, ideally between 15°C and 30°C. It is not tolerant of frost and must be protected from temperatures below 10°C, which can occur in UK homes during colder months.

Humidity: Tillandsia caput-medusae appreciates moderate to higher humidity levels. While it can adapt to typical indoor humidity in the UK, especially with consistent watering, increased humidity can encourage lusher growth.

Growth Habit: It has a rosette growth habit with a bulbous base and twisting, tapering leaves. It is an epiphyte and is typically displayed mounted on wood, cork, or simply placed on decorative objects.

Toxicity: Tillandsia caput-medusae is generally considered safe for people and animals. However, it's always a good practice to prevent ingestion.
