Tradescantia cerinthoides is part of the Commelinaceae family, its native range is SE. & S. Brazil to NE. Argentina where it grows as a subshrub primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome.

'Brightness' is a variegated cultivar; it is rapidly growing trailing plant with long, slender stems adorned with bright green foliage that is prominently striped with creamy white or silvery bands.

The genus name Tradescantia honours John Tradescant the Elder and John Tradescant the Younger, English naturalists and gardeners from the 17th century. The specific epithet means "similar to Cerinthe."

Light: Tradescantia 'Brightness' thrives in bright light that is not direct. Strong, direct sunlight can harm its leaves, potentially causing burning or a reduction in the variegated patterns. Insufficient light may result in slower growth and the white stripes fading, leaving the foliage a duller green. A position near a window with filtered light in a typical UK home is ideal.

Water: The potting mix should be kept consistently damp but not saturated. Allow the upper inch or two of the soil to dry between waterings. Too much water can lead to root problems, while allowing the soil to become overly dry can cause wilting and browning of the leaves. Ensure the pot drains well.

Soil: A potting mix that drains well is essential. A standard houseplant compost, possibly mixed with perlite or coarse sand to improve air circulation and drainage, is often recommended.

Fertilising: Use a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser every two to four weeks during the active growing period in spring and summer. Reduce or stop fertilising during the autumn and winter months when the plant's growth naturally slows.

Temperature: This plant prefers average indoor temperatures, ideally between 15°C and 26°C. It is not tolerant of frost and should be shielded from cold air currents and temperatures below 10°C, which can occur indoors during colder UK months.

Humidity: Tradescantia 'Brightness' tolerates typical household humidity levels. While it does not require high humidity, it can benefit from slightly increased moisture in the air, particularly during drier indoor periods.

Growth Habit: This is a fast-growing trailing plant, with long stems that will cascade over the edges of its container. Regular pinching back of the growing tips can encourage a bushier and fuller appearance.

Toxicity: Tradescantia 'Brightness' is generally considered mildly toxic if eaten by humans or pets, potentially causing irritation or stomach upset. It's best to keep it out of reach of children and animals.
